Everyone knows Pit bulls are notoriously and wrongfully stereotyped (if you believe the stereotypes just stop reading.) But you know what other breed gets a lot of shit? I bet you can guess from the title of this post. Yes, it's Chihuahuas. People constantly assume that their little ass-holes. Do they deserve it? (Maybe) I have 5 Chihuahuas in my life right now. Roxanne, Frederick, Laverne, Shirley, and Buster. And I love them all equally.(Just kidding, Laverne is the best one.) They all have different personalities, some are friendly, some are kind of dicks. Their not ALL ass-holes, just some of them.
On the one hand, most of my Chihuahuas, are friendly, and have wonderful personalities. They will lick your face, and lay in your lap. Their also great with kids, and other dogs. I will take credit for these traits, because I am a wonderful owner.
Now why are some of them dicks? Their not, well not to me. They love me, they love my boy friend, and they love his family( they don't care for mine, and I don't blame them.) But they don't love strangers, and they don't love a lot of my friends.(Again, I don't blame them.) They will growl, bark, snap, and even bite(not hard, it's like a stay the fuck away from me, I'm warning you, kind of bite). I of course being the loving mother that I am, don't see any flaws in them, and find this adorable. What I don't find adorable is the conversation that usually happens after this behvior.
Every time one of the dogs acts like an ass-hole to someone, I hear the same thing a lot. "Chihuahuas are always mean." Okay..Well then why is Laverne wagging her tail, and licking you? (Because Laverne is the best, that's why.) And do you honestly think if my dogs behaved this way all the time I would own them? Well I might, but I would be covered in teeth marks. But the person I'm having this conversation with, will immediately hate all my dogs. And then insist on listing every Chihuahua they have ever known that was an ass-hole, to prove to me that all Chihuahuas are mean.
I'm sorry that some of my dogs can be mean(to you). In fact, I'm sorry when any dog ever is mean. But I assure you, it has nothing to do with the breed and all dogs are not the same. I assume people generalize other dogs all the time, and replace Chihuahua with whatever breed they decide sucks. It's not cool to do this, to any breed. But most importantly, it's not cool to assume all of my dogs suck. (Especially Laverne because she's the best.)
***Also, I want to point out that I try to keep the dogs away from strangers in general.(Not Laverne) Sometimes this is unavoidable, and that's where the issues arise. If you know an ass-hole dog lives in a house you shouldn't do the following things:
1. Enter the house with out ringing the doorbell and not allowing enough time for people to restrain the dogs.
2. Enter the house and think it's okay to kick the ass-hole dog that lives there.
3. Open the door and let all the dogs run out in front while not on a leash.
